Customer Reviews for  'Philips HTS3555 Home Theater System with iPod Connectivity (Black)'

Junky McJunkerson
Just poorly designed and clunky in every way. But it is a Home Theater System for $200, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. But seriously, in this day and age it is startling to see an electronic component so incredibly user unfriendly.

It's junk, but it's my junk until it is replaced - with something other than a Philips...

You get what you pay for, JUNK!
This system looks and sounds good... For about one year. Just like the Philips HTIB we
had before this one,it works good for a year (or less) then it says, "no disc". This is the last Philips we will ever buy.Save your money. Get a Panasonic or Sony. This one is in the shop.
When we get it back, I'm sure it will not last more than a year.Philips makes JUNK.

Acceptable, until it died
Enjoyed reasonably good service from this HTIB for about 18 months. Then one day it just wouldn't turn on. It's always been plugged into a surge protector. I think the power supply failed. Not worth getting repaired. I hate to have to re-run wires for a new set of HTIB speakers, so I'm looking for a replacement where I can use these old Philips speakers.

So-so system
So i decided to write this review after owning it for two years. I'd like to say that its a good buy for the price, but I've had worse systems last longer than this one. the first year was great, switching between dvd, radio, dock, etc was an annoying pain sure, but i never had any use for any of it, i also didn't notice the open and loading slow times either. I did however, try to use the dock for my Iphone, and it only worked half the time, the connections sucked. It also doesn't like to allow anything to connect to the usb port as well.

I've noticed alot of people have complained about the flimsy tray, although i agree it is flimsy, I have large dogs that have smacked it around being obnoxious a few times and it has not once broken.

The sub woofer puts out very little if at all any sound, that made me slightly angry but i also reminded myself that hey, you get what you pay for right? The surround sound is alright, i didn't need much the first year of using it as i was in an apartment at the time so it was great.

Anyways, the dvd player is now acting like its going out on me, skipping constantly, freezing up and not wanting to play movies at all. (tried cleaning it, upgrading it, which btw supposedly fixes all coax connection and USB problems but i have not tried it again yet.) All in all, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

cheap, junky, poorly made system
As they say, you get what you pay for. There's no doubt that it sounds good for the price (although the Sony HDX285 costs the same and sounds better). If sound quality is your *only* concern, then consider this system. If you care about workmanship, then don't. I had the system for 1 1/2 years and one thing after another began going wrong (the power wouldn't turn when certain outputs were plugged in; eventually the power just wouldn't turn on at all). But by the time the unit broke, I was relieved because I wanted to buy another anyway. Everything you do with this unit (put on a DVD, switch functions (e.g., from fm tuner to CD), eject a CD, etc) takes about 15+ seconds a piece. That might not sound like much but when you have to scroll through 5 functions to get from FM tuner to DVD, say, it gets really frustrating. Then you finally get to DVD and it takes 30 seconds or so for the unit to read the dvd. At last, after 2 minutes of pressing buttons and waiting, you get to watch your DVD. I have to admit, writing this, that doesn't sound that bad, but it really got frustrating for day-to-day use.

In sum, the whole unit just feels cheap and poorly made. I have the sense that most of the positive reviews on here regarding this unit are from people who haven't had it for a long time. My initial impression was "great for the price." It was only after having it for several months that the workmanship issues started to show themselves.

I recommend the SONY DAV-HDX285 unit, which I purchased after this unit. So far (1 month), it sounds better than the Philips unit and appears to be much better made.
