Do not buy this printer - wastes ink |
Though I'm a frequent Shoppreview customer, this is the first time I've felt compelled to review a product.
This printer wastes an ungodly amount of ink. My wife and I bought this for home printing and we'll print ** 10 pages ** before a cartridge needs replacing. We use the printer so infrequently, which may contribute to the problem (other reviewers have suggested this). I've had success with other Canon products but this printer is a disgrace to their company. I'm happy Shoppreview no longer sells it. |

Don't do it!!! |
|
I really don't understand why this printer is rated so high. I bought this printer as a high quality replacement for an HP I had for many years (PSC750) and it sucks. The ink runs out in what seems like 5 prints and there are about 7 different individual color cartridges at 13 bucks a pop that need constant rotational replacement and are not easy to find (and run out at all different times). on top of that, the photo printing is streaky so I ended up going to Kinkos (double suck) just so I would have SOMETHING printed for my portfolio to show at an interview. Wish I had put my 200 bucks elsewhere. |

Great printer.. but literally SUCKS LOTS OF INK! |
|
Had this printer for over a year now. Previously owned the Canon MP800 before it died. I do some slide and negative scanning hence my decision to go with the MP980. Set up could be a little challenging with the wi-fi but it all worked out. Scanning/copying/printing is great. Reason why I give 4 stars on printer is how much ink it sucks down! I really don't think I print that much and I feel I'm always changing ink cartridges. The bad thing is the printer can't be used for anything if the ink is out. No ink = no scanning. Used a chip resetter and refilled my own ink with the MP800 and that worked great... going to research the same option for the MP980. I'm sure the ink $$$ has more than paid for the printer a couple of times over. It's frustrating when you really need to print something that the thing runs out of ink and you're dead in the water. |

Tons of features ink waster |
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Easy to use, Reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, Fast printing after first page, Wireless printing.
Excellent image quality, copies photos very well, great scanning capabilities including negative film and slides. Easy to set up and built-in wireless networking.
This machine would have been the perfect multifunction if it wasn't wasting so much ink.
I woukd have given 5 eggs if I have review it right after I bought it.
Cons: Slow Print Speed on first page, Very High Ink Consumption.
The printer will ask to replace ink before inks runs out. After the black ink ran out, according to the unit, I was able to continue printing for more than a month.
The last time the black ink ran out, again according to the unit, I continue printing and obtained 123 printed pages with text and graphics. The color doesn't fair better.
This machine is a gold mine for Canon if you throw out the ink cartridge when the machine suggests. Just click OK on the machine and continue printing until it actually runs out of ink.
Another annoying issue is the delay to start printing the first page; that counteracts the speed of the machine.
Other Thoughts: Remember: Do Not replace ink when the unit says so, click OK on the machine and keep printing until the ink runs out.

I've never been so unhappy with a canon product |
I have owned 2 canon printers before this. I have owned, upgraded, still own a line of Canon Cameras & lenses. I've been happy with everything.
Until now.
Does this printer print well? I guess. Is it fast, not particularly, but we don't need speedy printing.
What it does do very well is drink ink with an alcoholic's thirst.
I am going to make this very simple:
We use this printer inconsistently, bordering on rarely. In one year, we have burned through enough ink to pay for a new printer. It's not just ridiculous, it's borderline immoral.
And it doesn't print if one ink is out (any one of SIX different inks). The whole thing just binds up on you. Forget trying to find "gray" at a local Staples on a Sunday night.
Another thing of note, so you get a sense at my unhappiness (some might call it outrage):
I almost never review products I don't like. It's just not my nature to outwardly complain or whine about this or that; I'd rather just not say anything or preferably, would rather just focus on things that I endorse or like.
The decision process that went into making this printer kill ink like it does forces me to give this printer the poorest review I can. And to be honest, you'll see I'm not really mentioning the quality of the actual prints, which should be the point. But, at the end of it all, it doesn't matter here.
So, it has to really make me unhappy to voice a review like this. I have no idea which other printer you should consider, but I know one thing: I'm in the market for a new printer.
Very unhappy, Canon. Very unhappy. |
